Laptop Buying Guide

Things you must consider before picking your laptop for graphic design and video editing work.

1) Central Processor Unit (CPU)

The processor is one of the major aspects of your laptop. You must look into it very cautiously and carefully.

It is the central power source of your system that run programs with the help of other peripherals. The CPU inside your laptop should be powerful.

Your laptop should have at least a 5th Gen AMD Ryzen 7 and 11th generation Intel i7 processors to get the full potential out of your laptop.

Generally, they are available with 6 to 8 cores, maximum processing speed around 4.5-5.0 GHz. To make the operation seamless, they are available with 16MB /24MB or a higher cache size.

If your budget allows you can go for higher AMD Ryzen 9 and Intel i9 processors as well. But I don’t recommend them for your work.

Note:- Don’t go for older generation processors just because you get them in cheaper. They will not fulfil your requirement for a longer period. Try to get the latest gen processor always.

2) Graphics Processing Unit (GPU)

The type of graphics incorporated in your laptop ultimately decides the visual experience you get out of it. To do your work seamlessly and effectively must consider at least NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3060.

If your budget allows you can go for higher-end GPUs like RTX 3070 or even RTX 3080 as well. If you have a limited budget then RTX 3050 is the best for you.

This will be based on new generation technology and have more Cuda cores than its predecessor. There is no point to waste your money on older GTX series GPUs.

3) Display

To do graphic design and video editing, you cannot compromise with the visual experience. Generally, the display size of 15.6-inch is ideal for these laptops.

However, You can go for a bigger or smaller screen at your convenience. But don’t go below the 14″ screen. (My recommendation)

They usually come equipped with the Full HD 1920×1080 pixels resolution. If your budget permit goes with a higher resolution display for better performance.

For colour accuracy look for the display that comes with 100% sRGB. These displays will give you more colour accuracy during your work.

4) Random Access Memory (RAM)

The higher the configuration, the higher it’s for your laptop. More RAM allows you to run several applications at a time with no lag.

For the best and smooth experience get at least 16 GB DDR4 RAM with a 3200 MHz clock frequency.

However, If you find newer LPDDR4X RAM with a 4267 MHz clock frequency then just grab it before thinking twice.

5) Storage

Storage is very crucial to access your data and store your work. In today’s scenario, NVMe SSD storage is the best and viable solution for your storage need.

SSD gives you better boot time and run time start and end your favourite apps/programs. An SSD reads up to 10 times faster and writes up to 20 times faster than an HDD.

So, Go for at least a 512 GB SSD storage laptop so that you can access and store your data faster. However, Some people might find it less due to large file sizes.

So, These people can go for a 1 TB SSD storage. or they can buy a 512 GB SSD storage laptop and then upgrade it later.

Best Laptops for Graphic Design and Video Editing Work

  • ASUS ROG Strix Scar 15
  • MSI GP66 Leopard
  • Apple Macbook Pro 14/16
  • Lenovo Legion 5
  • HP OMEN

The latest 10th/11th Generation Intel Core i5 processor is more powerful than the previous ones.

So, These processors handle your Video editing but not easily. For overall good performance RAM size and a Good dedicated GPU is a must.

8 GB RAM is sufficient for 720p and 1080p video editing files. But if you want to edit higher resolution files like 4K you have at least 16 GB of RAM inside your PC.

However, for 16 GB to work efficiently you have to close all unnecessary background tasks and applications.

Generally, i7 is preferred by most of the editors over the i5 processor. i7 hyperthreading features result in ~30% more power and performance over i5. so, i7 is best for video editing here.

Alternatively, You can also use the AMD Ryzen 7 processor that is the direct competitor of an i7 processor.

Note:- Try to buy the latest generation processor for maximum support and a futuristic approach.

More SSD storage = better performance,

Get at least 512 GB NVMe SSD storage. If your budget is allowed you can opt for a more capacity SSD drive as well but don’t go for an HDD nowadays.
